cognitive improvements and a sense of peace
Ted is in recovery from having two strokes within 48 hours in July 2017 . He nearly died twice , but his will to live carried him to where he is today , and High Hopes is playing an important role in his recovery . As a result of these two brain attacks , Ted experiences paralysis on his right side , some reduced cognitive abilities , and aphasia . Aphasia is a communication disorder that causes difficulty speaking , though Ted understands everything that is being said .
As of now , Ted participates in the carriage driving program each week . It ’ s a unique opportunity for him because he is out in the elements and actively commanding the horse . This physical activity is great exercise for his brain , encouraging it to rewire itself using brain plasticity .
We ’ ve seen improvements in his cognitive deficits as well as his communication during the time he has been participating in carriage driving . Beyond the measurable impacts , the setting at High Hopes provides a sense of peace for both of us .
We both feel so grateful for the staff . They are genuinely committed to Ted ’ s recovery and always want to know what more they can do . I hope others who have loved ones with challenges may look into High Hopes . It is truly a very special place .
